Schools transactions update 31 October 2022

Applications for next year's P1 and S1 intake are now open. We’ve also made some free school meals payments. Read to find out more.

Pupils starting P1 and S1 in August 2023

P1 registration opens

The online registration form is now online for parents. Thanks to those of you have helped with testing prior to going live.

We sent letters to all parents of current N5 nursery pupils about registration.

As before, parents will provide the child’s birth certificate or passport, and if applicable, proof of baptism in the Roman Catholic faith.

Parents are only required to provide proof of their address if they are not liable for Council Tax.

The form is much the same as last year, however there is one key change:

  • parents of non-baptised children applying for their child to attend their Roman Catholic school can provide exceptional reasons for consideration. These will be displayed as part of their registration submission, but Transactions will consider the information – you do not need to do anything with this info.

We have updated the new P1 registrations phase 1 instructions - please take time to read these, especially if you're new to the process.

We have issued letters about the new procedures to all parents of N5 pupils living in the City of Edinburgh area, if they attend a City nursery or Early Years setting.

P7 high school allocations

P7 pupils have been allocated places in their catchment high schools and you can view these now in Admissions & Leavers > Allocations > Provisional Allocations Report

  • Primary schools - change Report Type to ‘Allocated From Report’
  • Secondary schools - change this to 'Allocated To Report'
  • click 'Get report Data'. This will generate a list of pupils.

Under the heading Allocation Type most children are ‘Allocated by Authority’ – i.e., allocated their catchment schools as we haven’t granted any placing requests yet. Children moving from Taobh na Pàirce to James Gillespie’s are marked ‘Accepted by Parent’, as are children attending the City of Edinburgh Music School allocated to Broughton High.

This week we are sending out the letters to parents about the transfer to high school and they should all be delivered by 4 November.

Requesting a different school

Parents can make a placing request for a school outside their catchment area if that is there first preference. These children must still be registered for P1.

Placing requests are now open.

Parents of P7 children may request a change in denomination – i.e., if attending a non-denominational primary school, they may request their Roman Catholic high school, or vice versa.

There is a new form created for S1 catchment ‘swaps’ as we call them – this form also replaces the old Roman Catholic admission form to be used to provide proof of baptism and/or exceptional reasons.

S1 catchment form is now open.

Free school meals, milk, and clothing grants

We continue to receive a steady flow of applications, and these are being processed as quickly as possible.

Most families who applied up to 14 October qualified for both a £100 Cost of living payment as well as £145 payments, made up of £15 October holiday payment, and £130 Child Bridging payment.

Payments are made if the child currently receives income-based free school meals – so they do not need to apply for it. We use the same details we used to pay their clothing grant. However, some have not yet provided payment details, so we have written to these parents to request these.

For more info on these payments, including when they were paid, visit this page.

Scottish Child Payment

On 14 November parents of children ages 6 to 15 can apply for the Scottish Child Payment – this will replace the bridging payments, the last of which will be made before the Christmas holiday.

Parents will be able to apply by visiting this website:

Education Maintenance Allowances

We migrated our application form to a new platform over the summer. Unfortunately, there were some technical issues in receiving the data from these forms, however this has now been resolved and we are working hard to deal with the oldest applications. Additional resources are being put in place to help process the oldest applications. All applications received up to and including 30 September will be eligible to receive payments backdated to the start of term - students will not lose out.

The attendance confirmation procedure for schools remains the same as last year, with weekly spreadsheets containing details of awarded pupils being emailed to schools. We have made the first payments to successful pupils, and these will increase every fortnight.
