Pupils starting P1 and S1 in August 2020

Pupils starting P1 and S1 in August 2020

We have agreed the timetable and procedures for children starting P1 and S1 in August 2020.

By now you should have received posters for the open day on 30 October and P1 registration week 4 – 8 November.

Applications open on 4 November to coincide with P1 registration week.

We have issued letters about this to all parents of N5 and P7 pupils living in the City of Edinburgh area, if they attend a City primary, nursery or partner centre. We have also received details of pupils living in Edinburgh attending schools in West and Midlothian, and we have issued letters to these parents too.

PDF versions of the online forms are available to download and print for parents if required.  Please do not give these out before 4 November.

Please visit the Primary and Secondary 1 Orb page for more information – you can download the timetable, guidance and training help sheets, and copies of the letters issued to parents.

Catchment area realignment

Several catchment areas have been changed and this will affect places for P1 and S1. The schools affected are:

  • Balerno High, Currie Primary and High, Dean Park Primary and Nether Currie Primary – effective from August 2019
  • Trinity and Victoria Primary – effective from November 2019. Changes implemented in advance of new Victoria Primary building opening.
  • Gilmerton Primary, Gracemount Primary and High, and Liberton Primary and High – effective from November 2019. Changes implemented in advance of the new South East Edinburgh Primary School (Broomhills) opening in August 2020.

The online catchment map will be updated soon as will SEEMiS. This will allow the affected pupils to be registered at their new catchment school.

Some children will be guaranteed a place in their former catchment school if they have an older sibling already attending. Parents must apply using the placing request form.

As Broomhills is not yet open, parents will register for this school at Gracemount Primary. More information can be found at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/broomhillsprimaryschool.

Free school meals

We are now up to date with applications.

We do not ordinarily backdated late applications, and the award date is normally the date of processing. However, in exceptional circumstances we can backdate awards if parents are experiencing hardship, meaning they are unable to pay for meals already consumed. Please contact us if you want to request backdating for a pupil.

Education maintenance allowances

We are continuing to work hard to clear the backlog of applications. We are now up to applications received in mid-August. We ask that pupils continue to bear with us as we clear the backlog.

This year we are sending award letters and learning agreements by email if the pupil provides one. This saves on postage and gets the award to the pupil quicker.  Please ensure pupils can access printers in school if necessary.

When entering attendance confirmation for EMA on SEEMiS, please always remember to check each week back to the start of term, for new pupils coming on board.

Next update

We’ll send a further update before the end of November.
