Schools transactions update 31 October 2024

Applications for next year's P1 and S1 intake open on 1 November. We’ve also opened EMA winter applications. Read to find out more.

Pupils starting P1 and S1 in August 2025

P1 registration opens

The online registration form goes live by 10am at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/P1registration.

We sent letters about registration on 24 October, to all parents of current N5 nursery pupils attending a City nursery or Early Years setting.

One new change has been made to the form – if the parent selects their Roman Catholic catchment school they will be asked if the child is baptised in the Roman Catholic faith, and only if they select ‘yes’ will they be prompted to upload the certificate.

Parents can also make a placing request for a non-catchment school when they register – no separate form is required.

The P1 enrolment and registration guidance manual has been revised and is now on the Orb - Click here to download the latest version. We have streamlined the verify and registration process. Please familiarise yourself with the process before you start to deal with the new enrolments.

Most parents will not be required to upload any evidence with their form. Evidence will only be required in these cases:

  • 2 proofs of their address if they are not liable for Council Tax.
  • the child’s birth certificate or passport if the child does not attend a city nursery or early years setting.
  • proof of baptism in the Roman Catholic faith if registering for the RC school.

You can check what has been uploaded and request any information if necessary as part of the verify process.

P7 high school allocations

P7 pupils have been allocated places in their catchment high schools and you can view these now in Admissions & Leavers > Allocations > Provisional Allocations Report

  • Primary schools - change Report Type to ‘Allocated From Report’
  • Secondary schools - change this to 'Allocated To Report'
  • click 'Get report Data'. This will generate a list of pupils.

Under the heading Allocation Type most children are ‘Allocated by Authority’ – i.e., allocated their catchment schools as we haven’t granted any placing requests yet. Children moving from Taobh na Pàirce to James Gillespie’s are marked ‘Accepted by Parent’, as are children attending the City of Edinburgh Music School allocated to Broughton High.

We sent the letters to parents on 29 October about the transfer to high school and they should all be delivered by the end of the week.

Parents of P7 children may request a change in denomination – i.e., if attending a non-denominational primary school, they may request their Roman Catholic high school, or vice versa – or they can request a non-catchment school by making a placing request.

Placing requests open at 10am on 1 November.
